Plumber quote calculator
Build a plumbing quote from the labor, fittings, and other costs on the job in front of you. There is no city price list. Add a line for each part of the work, set the margin you want on the final price, and print a customer quote that leaves your costs and profit off the page.
Give feedback on this calculator. Leave out prices and customer details.
What to include
- Labor. Demolition, rough-in, setting fixtures, testing, and a return visit if you expect one and want it in this quote.
- Materials and fittings. Pipe, valves, connectors, and fixtures you supply. If a fixture is only an allowance, enter the allowance you are putting in the quote and name it in the job description.
- Additional expenses. Parking, permits, equipment hire, disposal, and travel charged as a cost rather than as hours.
- After-hours work. Put a higher rate or extra hours in the fields if that is how you price the call. The page does not add a night premium for you.
On the job
- If the customer supplies the water heater or faucet, do not put the full store price in materials unless you are buying it.
- A call-out fee is an amount you choose. Enter it in additional expenses, or cover the trip with labor hours. Do not count the same trip twice.
- Emergency work uses the same math. Change the rate or the hours only if that is how you price the call.
How the quote is calculated
Each line cost is quantity times the unit price you enter, rounded to the nearest cent. Direct cost adds the labor lines, the material lines, and the other expense lines. The target final price is direct cost divided by (1 − margin ÷ 100). On a plumbing quote that might be a leak repair plus a fitting plus a call-out. The margin is a share of the final selling price, not a markup stacked on the fittings.
With a discount, the price before discount is the target divided by (1 − discount ÷ 100). The discount amount is that pre-discount price multiplied by the discount, rounded to the nearest cent, and the final price is the pre-discount price minus the discount. A margin or discount of 100% or more is rejected. Your estimate shows the target margin and the actual margin after rounding. The customer printout shows the discount and the total, not your hourly cost or profit.
Arithmetic example, not a suggested price. Suppose labor, fittings, and other costs add up to 800, the margin is 20%, and the discount is 10%. The target is 800 ÷ 0.80 = 1,000, not 960. Profit is 200. The price before discount is 1,000 ÷ 0.90 = 1,111.11, the discount is 111.11, and the customer pays 1,000. A hidden leak, a return visit, or tax you did not enter will change what you keep.
Questions
How should I treat a call-out fee?
Enter the fee you intend to charge under additional expenses. If your call-out is really an hour of labor, enter that hour instead. Counting both bills the customer twice for the same trip.
Where do fixture allowances go?
Put an allowance in the material cost if it is money set aside for a fixture. Name the allowance in the job description so the printed quote shows what it covers.
What if I might have to open a wall?
Include the hours and materials you are willing to quote now. If the work is unknown, say that in the job description. This calculator cannot price hidden damage for you.
How do discounts work on a plumbing quote?
The final price is set from your costs and margin first. A discount raises the price shown before the discount so the amount after the discount still targets that margin.
Job categories
Leak repair, fixture installation, pipe replacement, and drain work are starting titles. Split diagnosis from the repair when the time is different, and put pipe, valves, or a fixture on their own material lines. A travel or call-out charge stays in other expenses when it is a flat amount. If the trip is billed as time, put those hours on a labor line instead of both.
Common estimating mistakes
- Treating a fixture allowance as profit. If the number is money set aside to buy the fixture, it belongs on a material line and in the job description.
- Quoting only the visible leak and leaving access, patching, or a return visit unstated.
- Using the margin field when you meant to mark up the fitting. Margin divides into the selling price. It does not multiply the fitting cost.
- Assuming the printed quote is an invoice. It is a customer price list from the figures on the page, and tax is absent unless you added it as an expense.
